CHAPTER 8

Ian stood there just looking at Colby. What the hell did they stumble in on? Who would hurt a small child.

Going to Colby's side, Ian tried to help soothe the child as he softly asked, "Who's Kimmy? Is she your sister?"

Shaking her small head, Mary sniffled as she said, "No, she's...she's my best friend. She made me go without her."

Mary pulled back with huge eyes as she urged, "I didn't want to. I told her to come with me but she...she said only one of us could go or they would know. So I used my claws, like my daddy taught me to do with the trees, and I made a hole and then I found Colby."

Ian nodded as he smiled softly, saying, "You did good, Mary. Now I have a question for you. Is that okay?"

Mary nodded as she wiped her eyes.

"I have a very good friend that is missing. We think the same bad guys that took you, might have taken him and his mate too. Do you remember anyone new being brought into the cabin with you?" Ian asked calmly.

Mary thought a minute and then whispered, "No, but I heard something outside when I was digging."

Ian became anxious, but knew he needed to remain calm so he didn't startle the child, so he took a deep breath, let it out slowly and asked, "What did you hear?"

"A bunch of men yelling." Mary answered.

Colby looked at Mary and asked, "Did you hear what they were saying, pinecone?"

Even with the situation, as it was, Ian could stop the small laugh that escaped him, when he asked, "Pinecone?"

Shrugging, Colby said, "When she shifts, her animal reminds me of a pinecone with little feet."

Mary pursed her lips and crossed her arms saying, "I'm not a pinecone! I'm a Pangolin. My daddy said that we are very special, cause there are so few of us left. He said that we should be cherished and loved, cause if not, we won't be here no more. Daddy said we are almost stinked, and that's why we can shift as babies. Cause daddy said that's how we tecked ourselfs."

"Extinct and protect, honey, and your daddy is right." Ian automatically corrected the child as he thought about something.

Nodding, Mary said, "So is Kimmy. Well, all my new friends I met there are special."

Ian looked at Colby, surprised, and then asked, "Can you tell me about them, Mary? What makes your friends special?"

Pursing her lips in thought once more, It was clear she was thinking hard, as she said, "Well...Nicky is a slow lor..a slow lor..."

"Slow Loris?" Ian asked.

Nodding quickly, Mary smiled, "Yeah that's it! Mikey said he wished he could shift to his caracal cause then he'd bite the bad men, Suzette said if her javy rhino was out she'd stab 'em with her horn."

Leaning closer to Colby's ear, Mary whispered, "But I don't think she would, she's too nice."

Colby nodded in understanding, and said, "Well I'm sure she would want to help if she could.
